Objectors are just precious
Letter to the Editor
by Jeremy Randerson, Newtown

As an Air New Zealand employee, I'm dumbfounded at the anger directed at our policy of not seating males next to unaccompanied children. What would people say about us were a child in our care molested?

How would that affect the child's mental wellbeing?

Prevention is better than cure; that is the reason for our policy.

People beat their chests in righteous indignation, accuse us of violating human rights and then say we're over-reacting. They should not be so precious. Are they saying it is their right to sit next to a child they don't know?

What happened on the Qantas flight that started this debate was unfortunate and I can understand the man being upset about it. However, this policy has been in effect for years and no one has noticed because seating arrangements are taken care of before passengers even check in.

We want only to protect children in our care from any possible threat and to not do so for the sake of a few men's egos is naive and reckless.
